After completing NCS, our grads have gone on to do some pretty remarkable things. To show you how NCS helps you develop skills and gain confidence to pursue a career (and passion) you’re interested in, we’ll be highlighting an NCS grad each month on our blog. This month, we’re putting the spotlight on Max. Read about what he’s been up to!
Max is the Web Developer and Presenter at Dane Sound Radio – a Holmes Chapel radio broadcasting station that started in January 2015. At first, there were only five volunteers with zero experience in radio, but it quickly grew as more aspiring young people joined the team with an eagerness to learn more about the industry. Max was responsible for developing the website for Dane Sound in order to create a platform which displayed all the information regarding the station.
“I never believed website design was something I would enjoy but by teaching it to myself, I found a potential career path I could develop for the future,” Max says.
In May 2015 the station held a fundraiser with the goal of hosting a one-month trial to broadcast in FM and online. “After a successful trial period last summer, the station is continuing to fundraise towards the goal of finding a more permanent studio space,” explains Max.
But that’s not all this NCS grad has accomplished since his programme experience. Out of 20,000 applicants, Max was one of eight students chosen to sit on Virgin Media’s Digital Youth Council. He took the stage and presented at the largest teaching conference in the UK, with 3,000 teachers in attendance. He even got the chance to meet Sir Richard Branson himself!
“Meeting Richard was a very surreal experience. He was very chatty and was happy to answer our questions,” Max says. “He was also deeply interested in the outcomes of our meetings in London, which were based on the use of technology in education and how it could be improved.”
Being a part of Dane Sound has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Max. He says: “Working at the station and taking part in launching Dane Sound was such a new experience and something many young people don’t get the opportunity to experience.”
Amazing stuff! It’s great to see how the NCS volunteering spirit rubbed off on Max long after his programme experience. Find out how you can get involved with Dane Sound Radio here.
