5 British Olympic Young Hopefuls
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games kick-starts this Friday (5 August) and we can’t wait to watch the best athletes from all over the world compete in the biggest sporting event of the year…no scratch that...ever! After four years of training, this is the moment when all the athletes take the spotlight and get rewarded for their hard work!
We’ve highlighted our top five young British Olympic hopefuls who are bound to make their mark this summer. Check out the athletes competing in swimming, gymnastics, track and more!
It’s hard to believe this Olympian was once scared of the water, especially since he’s now one of the fastest swimmers in the world! The 21-year-old has already bagged golds at the Commonwealth Games, European and World Championshionships, so all he needs is an Olympic gold to add to his collection. Peaty will be competing in the 100m breaststroke, where he currently holds the world record of 57.92! Will he beat it? Tune in on 6 August and find out!
Adams was the first female to win an Olympic boxing title at the 2012 Olympic Games, where she beat China’s three-time Champion Ren Cancan – now that’s what we call girl power! After four years, nothing is holding her back from winning another Olympic gold! Catch Adams in the Women’s fly 51 kg on 12 August.
Asher-Smith is only 20 years-old, but don’t let her age fool you. The sprinter finished fifth at last year’s World Championships and with the way things are going, she’s definitely one to watch out for this summer. She’ll be representing Great Britain in the 200m sprint as well as the 4x100m relay. Make sure to watch her individual event on 15 August!
Aside from our NCS Ambassador and Olympic medallist Louis Smith, Whitlock is definitely another gymnastic force to be reckoned with. The gymnast took the bronze in the pommel horse event at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and he’s definitely one to watch across several other categories this summer. You can watch his Olympic journey begin for the Men’s individual all-around on 6 August!
The 23-year-old Taekwondo star won the gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and she definitely has her eyes on gold in Rio. Jones will be competing yet again in the Women’s 57 kg category, so make sure you watch her kick some backside on 18 August!
And Louis Smith of course, keep your eyes peeled for an exclusive interview with him later this week!
